CMS Great Baan Gaan action figure review

Publié le 29 Novembre 2006 par Hellric dans Mech & robots

My collection of robots and super robots is still expanding. Here's my latest haul, the Great Baan Gaan action figure from CMS. Great Baan Gaan ("Saint of Brave") is quite popular for Japanese robots fans, but only Yujin had made it so far, in a smaller and less detailed version. What I like in this robot is of course its big wings and the small chest wings, the blades on the legs and the bow, its a shiny and original character.

This is not a toy of CMS Brave series like Genesic Gaogaigar or Gaofighgar. This one is a smaller figure, without diecast parts and without transforming capacities. I choose this because it's cheaper than the upcoming DX Baangaan from CMS, and anyway I would only keep it in the Great Baangaan form, so transforming gimmicks are not my priority. As space is also important, I was quite happy that this one isn't too big.

The figure is only 15 cm high to the top of head, so it's the same size as most Bandai's Gundam Fix Figuration figures, but the detail level is also the same as on these mechas, so this is some very good work from CMS. There are small flaws in the paint application, CMS has still to learn before making perfect toys; but nothing really bad, and this is a great display piece anyway. Posability is very good, probably better than on the big upcoming DX figure. Joints are rather good, but some are maybe a bit too loose (feet, arms). The right arm was a bit problematic because of the weight of the huge sword, so I had tu use some superglue to hold the hand in place. As accessories you have open and close hands, the sword and a nice bow.

Ok, enough talk, now the pictures :

Tyranid Giant Hive Queen update

Publié le 26 Novembre 2006 par Hellric dans Tyranids

Work on my big project, the gigantic tyranid hive queen, is going slowly but progressing anyway. Since last update, I've added the backplates to enhance the tyranid-like aspect. I had tried gaunt blades as nails on the toes, but it didn't work well, so I've sculpted new claws so the feet are more homogeneous. And the sculpt of the tail is done, scales on the back and ribcage-like texture on the inner side. Now I just have to add the carnifex talons on the arms and finish the ovispositor of the tail, and then it's finished for the details... I'm now going to assemble the clawed arms and the tail. Wings will be added after the main painting is done.

CMS Brave 05 Gaofighgar mini-review

Publié le 26 Novembre 2006 par Hellric dans Mech & robots

I've been so amazed by the Genesic Gaogaigar that my interest in this serie has grown and my attention was caught by the Gaofighgar. What I like in this mecha is the fact that he has a style that lies somewhere between traditionnal Brave super robots and more "modern" robots like Gundams. It has the same style as Genesic Gaogaigar/ Gaogaigar but without the most shiny gimmicks, as the clawed feet, lion chest and tail.

Once again we have a nice, big box : 43 x 31 x 18 cm, so clean some space for the box & for the model ! The artwork on the back is anime-like but with the actual miniatures, showing the beginning of the Final Fusion sequence.

Inside the box are the 4 separate models :  Gaofar, Stealth Gao III, Linear Gao II and Drill Gao II. On these, only Gaofar has some diecast on the chest and top of legs. This is a bit disappointing compared to the Genesic. All parts look still nice, but the amount of detail is not as high as in GGGG. I advise you to put the small plastic parts that cover the screws before assembling GFG, it will be a lot easier.

Doing the final fusion was quite easy, parts assemble quite well, but I have some problems to attach the wings, the pegs to attach air intakes to Gaofar's body are too small. Finally I used the part to attach the GFG head to Stealth Gao III and like this wings are better secured, and the head locks well on Gaofar's head too. GFG's helmet opening is very loose, so I had to use a small ball of "blue tack" to hold it locked.

Another small problem is that the "skirt" armour isn't as close to GFG'sbody as it could be, on some angles the view is not so good because of this detail. Good thing is that he's very stable, and it has a solid feeling when you hold it. Joints are tight.

Besides of this, this is still an awesome robot, 23 cm from feet to head, with some nice gimmicks (drills extend, Linear Gao II can eject it's boosters, green ends for the wings to simulate flight mode), and very anime accurate. Just the "value for money" is not as good as Brave 03 Genesic Gaogaigar's, but both are worthy and are now good friends here :) :

Gigantic hive queen, update

Publié le 12 Novembre 2006 par Hellric dans Tyranids

It was said on the warpshadow topics that this beast didn't look tyranid enough. I have decided to add a few tyranid scales on the head and claws, and to rework the head. I will later add scales on the legs, tyranid carnifex talons near the hands and gaunt talons on the toes. The eyes will be split in two to show enhanced senses.

Pictures of the new head, tail and claw.

Nightmares of Lovecraft - Cthulhu

Publié le 10 Novembre 2006 par Hellric dans Cthulhu

FINALLY !!! Yes, finally I've received this awesome monster. I 've been waiting for it for 2 years ! And I have to say that I'm not disappointed ! The sculpt is fantastic, incredible details, great textures. The paint is good but has a few flaws, I'd say it's your average action figure level of paint. So this is really a must for all Lovecraft / Cthulhu fans, very good product for a price of 18.99 $ IMHO.

I think I'll probably repaint it, as this is an insanely good mini and I want the best paint for Him :)

Gigantic tyranid Hive Queen project

Publié le 10 Novembre 2006 par Hellric dans Tyranids

After being quite calm regarding tyranids, I come with a new big project, my biggest tyranid project to date actually. The idea is to develop further my hive queen concept by making a giant hive queen. The size is roughly 9" (22 cm) high to the top of head. To do this, I will proceed as for making my custom Cthulhu, I mean I'll be using McFarlane action figures as main parts : alien spawn for body, mutant spawn for head, claws from the star wars Acklay arena beast, and Ultima online dragon wings...  The general shape will be like my smaller queens : big head evoking a highly intelligent and psionic being, with mandibles, the tentacles will be a very long single barbed tongue. The wings will be sprouting from the side of the back. The legs and feet receive additionnal talons, the knees have some clawed fingers like the main hands. The tail will be long, beginning at the middle of the back, and it will be ended by an ovipositor, consisting of a ripper head on a part from koralon breeder, and 4 additionnal talons are to be added, to grab preys... The big claws will come under the arms. These arms will receive big carnifex talons on their external side. The ribcage has some hooks sprouting from it. For all the model, I have kept the texture of the alien spawn. I firstly thought that I would add typical tyranid scales/armour parts, but I finally prefered to keep the original texture, as is is in fact more detailed and original, I felt that this beast needed a special texture, and I liked all the little  "chimneys" (for spores ?). So i tried to copy these textures on the claws. I have elongated many nails and talons from the spawn parts, to make them more acute. But enough talk, here are the first shots. No panic, they are only wips and more things will be added/reworked.

Gigabrain Dancouga action figure

Publié le 4 Novembre 2006 par Hellric dans Mech & robots

While browsing the forums of Robot Japan, I discovered another super robot, not new at all but that I didn't know : Dancouga. I liked the design immediately so I looked to buy one. There was a nice one from Bandai SOC serie, but it was very expensive, ~200 $. So I continued my search and found this action figure. It's not diecast, not transformable, but it's very detailed and has a lot of accessories : two swords, a twp-handed sword, two small gun, one big gun, various hands. The articulations are very good, allowing great poses without becoming too loose. This figure was sold out but I had the chance to find Robwhit1 from Robot Japan board who was selling his. The robot is 8" high at the head and has more than 10" wingspan.
