It's been a veeeery long time since I posted anything reated to my beloved tyranids, but I think the inspiration is back, so here's my new project : a Hive Tyrant of Hivefleet Cthulhu, this was from the sight of those beasts that the fleet was named like the Great Old One on some forgotten legends. This is the fusion of two of my passions : tyranids and Lovecraft mythos.

The Parts :

(Full size)

It's based on a carnifex kit with elongated legs, balrog wings. The body is decorated with additionnal plates on the torso, spikes on the back and sides, and a round mouth on the belly. The head is a micetic spore sac from Forgeworld, cut at the base  and front, with triple eyes from the carnifex and home-made head plate, horns and side, and of course some mandibles.

The legs have been resculpted with additionnal plates and side details. Wings features gaunt claws and  large scything talons, and I've added some muscular texture to make them look more niddy.

The big backplate is from forgeworld, the tubes have been cut to be like cannons, the inner side and the ends are resculpted to look like some kind of bio-cannon. I'll add ammunition-sacs under the arms with tubes to feed those weapons.

Now I still have to do the tail, feet and arms, and add lots of tentacles coming from under the carapace and rib cage.

Stay tuned : following updates soon !

AT LAST ! Project complete. Finally it has been quite fast since its beginning in mid october, with the first ideas coming in August. So the first shots of the creature are in my tyranid gallery, a little blurry 'cause it's very difficult for my cheap camera to focus due to the big size of the model. I hope you can get an idea of the beast, but I have to say that those pictures really don't do justice to the miniature, I'll try to make better ones with my father's camera. I think I've picked most of the details that were on the awesome alien spawn/mutation spawn.

I've just added some rocks, a ripper, egg and tyranid scenery from the stealer sprues to fill the base. Last details updated were the tail, wich is now done with epic tyranid parts and a spineripper head, to look more 'niddy'. Had to resculpt some textures on top left arm to hide a joint.

Hope you enjoy !

Hey people,

First I want to wish you all the best for 2007 for you and your family, may your wishes (well, at least some of them) come true and let's hope 2007 will bring us a lot of great new nightmares miniatures and projects.

I'm very happy because my giant hive queen project is coming to its end : the beast is now painted, and I'm finally very satisfied with the result, and this is a relief because on such a big project, you have doubts and fear that all the work you put into the model might not pay in the end. I could have be even further with the paint job but there were so many details to bring to life that I don't have courage to work more on them, but it's cool anyway, and my goal ain't to et a Golden Demon, just to make a cool mini. Now I'm just making a few finitions like a base. The base won't be that impressive, I'll keep it quite simple to contrast with the very busy monster :) I also have to find an appropriate name. Suggestions are welcome : hellric@swing.be if you have an idea...

Now just a few days and you'll be able to see the beast. Be prepared ;)

Hi, back at least to work on my tyranid Hive Queen, I've been very busy at work and at home the last days, so sorry for the lack of update. Motivation was also a bit down because of the size of the beast to paint. This one will be painted in the red/bone scheme like hive queen 3, as this is a very original model, I want to paint it in a quite traditionnal way. The most boring part is applying the base colours, now it's nearly done, it's going to progress, at least I hope, I'm now on holidays for 2 weeks so this should give me time to paint. With the basecoat done, I'm very happy to see that the sculpted parts blend very well with the rest.

I'm going to keep the wings with their original deep red colour, and so they will still be transluscent, I love this effect too much. I've also decided not to glue the back spines, so I'll be able either to place them or to remove them at will. I've also received the carnifex kit, so the talons are going to be integrated into the forearms.

Work on my big project, the gigantic tyranid hive queen, is going slowly but progressing anyway. Since last update, I've added the backplates to enhance the tyranid-like aspect. I had tried gaunt blades as nails on the toes, but it didn't work well, so I've sculpted new claws so the feet are more homogeneous. And the sculpt of the tail is done, scales on the back and ribcage-like texture on the inner side. Now I just have to add the carnifex talons on the arms and finish the ovispositor of the tail, and then it's finished for the details... I'm now going to assemble the clawed arms and the tail. Wings will be added after the main painting is done.
