Tyranid elite warrior - Hive Cthulhu

Publié le 29 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Tyranids

Here's a rapid conversion I've just made : a winged warrior, the elite warriors who guard the Hive Queen Primus herself.

The model is based on a new lictor (deathleaper), with forgeworld wings. The arms are those of a broodlord with parts of the deathleaper's ones ("hands"), and a bigger talon from old tyranid bioships. also on the arms are venom sacs and a thin metal wire to feed the talon with the poison. Feet are the broodlord's hands. The head has 3 pairs of mandibles, like the mother hive queen. I sculpted plates in the middle of the ribcage and added 2 tiny claws on the chest to fill it a bit (reminder of the hive queen too). backplates are similar to the Hive queen's this shows the high status on the warrior. Finally the tail is the one of the deathleaper with 2 additionnal talons and 2 venom sacs, I placed it so that it strike to the front, the warrior is actually landing to strike on a prey.

Painting should be quick, the scheme will of course be the same as the Hive Queen Primus, Omega Tyrant and Aquactor.

This can also be considered as a Cthulhu Star Spawn, but only done with tyranid parts ;)

CMS Genesic GaoGaiGar review

Publié le 28 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Mech & robots

When I’ve seen the Genesic Gaogaigar, I longed to get one, but which one. I had long hesitations between Yujin’s action figure, Max Factory chogokin or the one from CMS.

This leads us to the articulations. The arms and knees are strong, the waist ones could be stronger, GGGG tends to fall backwards if you try to make him stand too vertical, I advise you to bend him a bit to the front. The posability isn’t great, you can change the pose of the arms/hands/shoulders and of the tail, but the legs must remain like on my pictures, any other try will result in failure. A nice thing is that the jaw of the lion moves : opens or closes. The wings can be spread or not.

More pictures in the Mech & Action figures gallery !

All in all it is a great toy, I’m not disappointed, because I like the pose he’s forced to get. It is obviously designed for collectors and showcase, and it this role it shines, it’s an impressive display piece, more than 30 cm / 12” tall, and very similar to the anime ! But forget it if you want intensive playing…

My choice went to CMS because it was bigger and cheaper than Max Factory, Yujin’s seemed to have a poor finition. And CMS’s one is the only one that you can actually transform.

When I got it, I was surprised by the size and weight of the box : more than 53 cm long, about 2 kg… wow. Inside the bow are the separate robots/vehicles : the two drill vehicles (legs of the GGGG), the lion headed robot (torso of the GGGG), a dolphin and a shark (shoulders of the GGGG), and the huge flying dragon/bird (back & wings of the GGGG). Plus all the accessories that appear in the serie, including my favourites: big clawed hands, Heaven and Hell.

Most of the legs and the skeleton of central robat are in metal, other parts are plastic. The arms are in soft plastic with a nice touch feeling. Other parts in plastic are nice too, not too much mold lines, except on the grey parts of the feet, just above the claws. The gold parts are very shiny, you may like it or not, I hope this will last in time. The head could have been inked to increase contrast in the white and red parts.

The assembly was quite easy, even if the notice was in japanese, the colour pictures help a lot, it ook me 30 minutes to complete it. The parts are well engineered and the transformation is quite smooth. The most difficult part was to pose the spread wings… and to pose the Genesic himself.

Bandai Equip & Prop Vol. 5 Garo Berserk

Publié le 27 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Action figures

I've received my Berserker Garo from Taiwan ! This is an incredibly huge action figure : 32 cm /13" high. The number of articulations is very high, even the fingers are on ball joints. The details are incredible, and the metallics paint is very well done, shading and highlighting is the best I've seen on an action figure. About the down points, I have to say that the figure is sow huge that it's difficult to make it stand, it tends to fall . The joints are good but still not really strong enough to support the weight of the creature. I strongly recommend you to put it against a vertical surface or to glue the foot joints, but also the arms and legs main attaches.

Forgeworld Eldar Avatar & Greater Daemon of Nurgle

Publié le 27 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Miniatures news

Those long awaited models are at last revealed at the London Games day. The less I can say is that they are in my opinion very disappointing. The avatar is just a bigger version on the metal one, exactly the same look, not even another more impressive weapon, it doesn't bring anything new to the concept. Only for those who think size does matter I'd say.

The Great Unclean One presented was a WIP. Some will say it's very Nurglesque with his friendly smile. I think he looks too kind, just like a sumo with skin disease. I wonder how this thing can fight ?

Finally, while I intended to buy both models, I won't buy any. Save my money for more interesting things coming from Japan or young talented small miniatures lines like Magnificent Egos. (pictures courtesy of Spacker from Warseer)

Tyranid Flying Hive Tyrant conversion

Publié le 24 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Tyranids

After all this robot/mecha madness, back to horror and aliens : here's a focus on my latest tyranid conversion  : a flying hive tyrant. Inspiration for this one came from Golden Demon winner E-Arkham / Kep (from Warpshadow and CMON).

This flying tyrant is based on 3rd edition tyrant and balrog wings + carnifex parts. This one is really done to lead flying armies, he's not supposed to land very often, he can fly high during days. That's the Condor of my army :) You will notice it has 3 rows of back chemneys, 3 front and rear head spikes, 3 tails, 3 tongues and 3 pairs of eyes... This time I've sticked to the 6 limbs "rule" of the tyranids, so all purists out there won't bitch me about that :)

Gundam Fix #0025 Penerope

Publié le 22 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Mech & robots

Long time fan of robots but newbie collector, I started collecting Gundam Fix figurations from Bandai 2 years ago. My favourite Gundam ever is the Penerope, amazing design and engineering from Moriki Yasuhiro.

The figure is very fragile, and I'd like to get a second one, to show the other option of this great kit, the Xi Gundam, which is very cool too. I especially like the very different, unconventionnal and original look of this gundam.

Gundam Fix #7002 Freedom

Publié le 20 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Mech & robots

Here are pictures of my new baby  : the fix Freedom Gundam #7002 ZGMF-X10A.

I like the fact that he can deploy 4 railguns + beam rifle and hold a shield. Only deception is its size : 16 cm to the top of wings, but otherwise a great model with outstanding posability . Shoulder joints are a bit weak.

More pics in the mech gallery as usual.

Lord of Bystonwell - Aura battler Sirbine review

Publié le 20 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Mech & robots

Hi there,

I'm very happy to introduce you my new figure from Megahouse, the limited edition Aura Battler Sirbine from Megahouse. I just got it from Hobbylink Japan, at a great price (about 20 EUR less than on Ebay).

The sculpt of this model is very very good, there are loads of crisp details, the translucent parts (wings, chest) are beautifully done. The paint job is good too, I'm just a bit disappointed by the black wash that sometimes make the model look dirty, other thatn this, all details are painted. The posability is very limited, this is clearly a display figure, not an action figure nor a toy.

The figure comes with aternative hands an a sword. You have to attach the wings, but beware, they are very fragile, I borke one while assembling the beast., I advise to sand the attach a bit and use superglue to fix them well.

For me it's clearly the best figure in the Dunbine range, and also the biggest (23 cm high !!!), even taller than the Virunvee. Now let's hope they make a Zwarth or Zwauth aura battler in the same way.

Spawn - Interlink 6

Publié le 12 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Mech & robots

Today I want to focus on one of the biggest mecha action figure ever, or maybe the biggest : Interlink 6 from Mac Farlane toys. It is the combination of 6 mecha action figures. The design and detail are completely insane and look like no other one !

Mc Farlane have made a new release of those robots, called now "Cyber Units", but beware, it seems that this version doesn't combine to make this Interlink, so try to find the original version, if you want to own this awesome Mech !

Aura Battler Dunbine - Zwauth - complete kit

Publié le 11 Septembre 2006 par Hellric dans Mech & robots

Wow, today I'm quite proud as I have finished my first garage kit ever, and I'm very happy of the result. This is my favourite aura battler, so as this one doesn't exist as action figure, I decided to give it a try and buy the garage kit from Hobbyfan, this was the only place where they had this kit in stock. I really enjoyed painting it, I used all techniques : dry and wet brushing, blending, wetblending, inking, highlighting, lighting effects, shaded metallics, use of mat and gloss varnish depending on the parts. I managed to finish it in 3 weeks, because I was very eager to see it in his full glory.

So this is the Zwauth Aura Battler, piloted by the Black Knight !

Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I !

Many other pictures are awaiting you in the Mech Gallery...
